Mission
:
The Buchanan County Victim/Witness Unit is dedicated to the fair treatment of crime victims and witnesses within the criminal justice system. It is the duty of this office to act as representatives for all citizens to ensure the free exercise of their constitutionally guaranteed victim's rights.

Summary of Services:

The Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney's Office in 1978 was the first to establish a Prosecutor based Victim/Witness unit in the State of Missouri. A comprehensive program of services provided by three full-time staff and supported by the entire office staff, including: attorneys, paralegals and clerical. Services are provided primarily to victims and witnesses of crimes committed in Buchanan County.

Return of recovered personal property.
Notification of dates for court appearances.
Notification of case continuance.
Notification of sentencing date.
Assistance with alternative victim impact presentations.
Notification of final case disposition.
Free parking.
Transportation arrangements when needed.
Babysitting services if needed for court appearances.
Personal escort from the reception or waiting room to the court room.
Support and advocacy during criminal justice proceedings.
Referrals to appropriate social service agencies.
Employer intervention.
Secure waiting room.
Collection of restitution, when court ordered.
Answers to questions victims or witnesses may have, regarding their cases.
Assistance filing for Crime Victims' Compensation.
Community education/awareness programs.
Internship program.
Specialized Domestic Violence Unit.

    • An assistant prosecuting attorney who specializes in domestic violence cases both state and municipal courts.
    • Immediate contact with victim upon case submission from law enforcement.
    • Ongoing weekly contact with victim.
    • Assistance filing ex parte petitions with the court.
    • Domestic violence advocate at all court proceedings when the victim is present.
    • Contact with the victim concerning the case outcome in their absence.
    • Expedited court dockets in both state and municipal courts.
